The Lakelands Community Gardens is a group of community members with the goal of assisting the food insecure communities of Greenwood and Abbeville.
United Way of the Lakelands, with support from community partners and volunteers, seek to increase local fresh food access through the creation of 8 strategically placed community gardens. Through the implementation of these community gardens, we seek to address food insecurity and provide opportunities to learn about local farming systems. Through our gardening opportunities and educational workshop, families, teens, and children in Greenwood and Abbeville Counties will understand soil health and structure, integrated pest management, composting, native and perennial plants, and food forests, water conservation, crop rotation and food preparation and preservation methods. Produce grown in the community gardens will be distributed to those affected by food insecurity and to whom have assisted in the community gardens.
